A digital training series for journalists covering upcoming elections in India
Google News Initiative, in collaboration with DataLEADS, has established one of the world's largest fact-checking initiatives in India, the GNI India Training Network. The Network supports journalists and media educators with digital training and upskilling opportunities. In its 5th year, the Network has so far trained 58,000+ journalists, media educators, fact-checkers and journalism students in more than 15+ languages across India, benefiting thousands of newsrooms and universities.
Google News Initiative India Training Network, in collaboration with DataLEADS and In Old News, is delighted to launch PollCheck Election Academy, a digital training series to facilitate journalists and newsrooms covering the upcoming elections in India. The overarching aim of the Academy is to provide journalists with comprehensive training on fact-checking, and enable them with the tools, know-how, and skills they need to gather, verify and tell engaging stories in the context of elections.
The Accelerator Series is an important component of the Academy that aims to equip participants with essential skills and insights to effectively navigate the upcoming poll season.
The three workshops under the series are:
Digital Investigation Accelerator (28-29 September 2023): Dedicated to advancing research and investigation skills, enabling participants to delve into intricate stories related to misinformation trends. Attendees will gain insights into cutting-edge techniques that facilitate comprehensive analysis and reporting.
Video and Media Literacy Accelerator (18-19 September 2023): The focus will be on fostering innovative video formats to counter misinformation and empower participants to think creatively about presenting accurate information in captivating ways. The participants will also be equipped with the skills needed to engage audiences effectively and uphold the integrity of information.
Digital safety Accelerator (27 October 2023): The workshop will address the specific needs of journalists for digital security and safety and provide them with tools and resources such as Google’s Advanced Protection Program and Enhanced Protection Program.

Google News Initiative India Training Network started with a curriculum sprint meet at Google office in Gurugram to develop course material for the fact-checking training.
The Network launched through a partnership between Google, Internews, DataLEADS, with technical and programmatic support from BoomLive, Alt News, First Draft and Storyful.
First Training of Trainers (ToT) conducted, followed by six more ToTs, onboarding 241 trainers and fact-checkers from all over India.
5,000+ editors, reporters, educators and journalism students trained across India
A pan-India training series launched right before 2019 elections to support journalists covering the national elections. 28 roadshows conducted in 28 cities in 33 days training 1800+ participants
Data Verification Boot Camp conducted for the Network trainers at Google office, Gurugram
IFCN Meet held in New Delhi to share with participants details about IFCN’s work and code of principles. The meet was attended by IFCN certified and non-certified organisations.
The Network activities led to the launch of many key fact-checking initiatives in India, helped them become a signatory to the IFCN and resulted in an exponential surge in the number of fact-checking stories across several languages and platforms.
Due to Covid-19 outbreak, the Network successfully moved from in-person training to online training sessions
Special Webinar series conducted in 12 different Indian languages on fighting the misinformation related to Covid-19
Trauma literacy and mental well-being webinar was conducted for the Network trainers and fact-checkers.
Seven ToT E-meets conducted to regroup and review ongoing trainings across India
The Network has become one of the world’s biggest and most impactful fact-checking training Network, equipping a new generation of Indian journalists and media educators with tools and strategies to spot and debunk misinformation.
In collaboration with Dart Centre Asia Pacific, the Trauma Literacy ToT conducted for the Network trainers to help them build capacity for resilience, collegial support and self-care.
Two-day recertification ToTs to verify the current competence of the Network trainers in fact-checking training and to ensure that the Network trainers remain up-to-date on current online verification tools and approaches.
58,000+ journalists, journalism educators, fact-checkers, and media students trained in 475+ workshops in more than 15 languages across India since 2018, benefitting at least 1700 Indian newsrooms and universities.
